Sound and Image Assignment3.1 Introduction to Documentary

#1 Introduction to Documentary

The observational mode

This documentary model can express the real truth entirely.
The audience needs such an objective perspective, which is to see the world from a window. However, this window is unlimited, which means it does not take any prejudices. There are many documentaries that have been banned because they expose very sharp facts. For example, Beijing Besieged by Waste (2010), a documentary that exposes the pollution of China’s garbage. There has no complete documentary on the Chinese network now. But the audience needs to know such a naked truth.

However, there are still many documentaries that record a certain reality, but it is easy to feel that there is a component of performance. For example, some behind-the-scenes documentaries of television reality shows. Since the TV reality show has a sense of entertainment and variety, its related documentary film cannot be completely separated from such a setting. Frankly speaking, the authenticity of reality TV shows is worth exploring. But we must say that such a documentary still has viewers.

I want to choose this documentary mode because of its objectivity. I want to record the complete factual truth without any personal emotions and interests. Moreover, things are not only a single side, one person will not only have a simple and kind face as well.

Sound and Image Assignment3.2 No Direction Home

#2 No Direction Home

This film may be a documentary about the singer who appears in this episode.
I am not clear about the genre of this kind of music, but I have seen the old record player. I can speculate that this kind of music genre is now declining. The entire video is dominated by black and white, which conveys a very clear sense of memory. And with a very strong feeling of blue.

In this episode, this singer has presented his childhood, youth and memories of just beginning to be a singer. So in the latter part, the film may tell the singer’s discovery on the road to music. For example, what kind of awards were won, or what popular works were created.

Back to the title, no direction home. This title corresponds to the style of the entire movie. It can be inferred that the film will later tell about the singer’s hardship on the road to music. For example, the impact of music from different schools, or from the pressure of life. The singer himself left his home and went to music. When he wanted to go home, he couldn’t find a way to go home.

Sound and Image Assignment3.3 Forbidden Lies

#3 Forbidden Lies

I imagined what the track in this video (one minute from 35 seconds) edited in Pr looks like this:

The video track part I did not conduct a very detailed analysis. The audio track I roughly analyze has the main audio track and an effect soundtrack. The first effect sound appears at 36 seconds. The corresponding picture is a book. A second effect sound appeared at 56 seconds, but this does not strictly speak be an effect sound. The typing sound was probably recorded at the time of the shooting, and at this time it was in the form of a sound outside the main track. This makes the sound of the video fit the picture.

From 1 minute 28 seconds, the sound started to be complicated. The two soundtracks begin to cross and the sound becomes compact.

From 1 minute 43 seconds, the video’s screen became animated. At this time, in addition to the narrator’s voice (main track), there are sounds for this part of the animation (effect soundtrack), such as heartbeat and moving sound.

From 2 minutes 27 seconds, the screen transitioned to a barbershop scene. At this time there were some barbershop sounds in the scene that was small. At the same time, you can also hear cheerful background music. This background music did not disappear until the end of this video clip.

This video can be seen as a documentary. However, the sound part is not simple. Up to 3 voices appear at the same time, which means that you need to control three tracks at the same time during the editing time.

Sound and Image Assignment3.4 Reflection on the lighting exercise

#4 Reflection on the lighting exercise

The lighting pattern I learned is as follows
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=3+point+lighting&rlz=1C5CHFA_enAU787AU787&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjXubnFsrTbAhVBzLwKHQSNDIcQ_AUICigB&biw=1200&bih=700#imgrc=ckL0-DSUMVaCeM:
In the figure above, we can see additional explanations for these three light sources, such as the angle of the key light relative to the camera. In actual shooting, it is not easy to completely accomplish these points. So, just as we practiced in the classroom, the actual lighting settings need to be adjusted according to the actual situation.

We have experience with these three light sources separately in class. However, I would like to say that before we learned about lighting, several classmates and I had taken several interview videos. At that time, we used the lighting source of the school’s media control room. So, when we reviewed the video we shot, we found that the biggest problem was light.

The most obvious problem shown in this screenshot is overexposure. The light on the person’s forehead, chest and arms are too bright. In other words, the main light source used a hard light source. We can only solve this problem by editing the video later. Since we were using the studio roof light instead of the three-point lighting pattern we learned, if I were to use the studio lighting again, I would try to apply the three-point lighting pattern to the studio lighting. For example, I can try to dim the main light source and reduce the top light range.

The problem with this figure is the opposite of the previous one. In this picture, people wear a hat. The hat plays a role in blocking the light source, so the character’s face appears darker. The studio’s lights are directed from the top down to the characters, so I can easily find that the top light source is always very large. This is also a drawback of the studio lighting. This requires the use of additional supplemental light sources. For example, add a key light source to the right side of the camera.

Sound and Image Assignment3.5 Colour Grade

#5 Colour Grade

I used the video of the camera movement to practice the colour adjustment.
First of all, I discovered that there was the auto button. For curiosity, I first chose to try this grading mode. As shown below

Obviously, our video was shot in a darker corner, so the exposure was automatically turned up a lot to make it look bright enough. The rest parts have also been adjusted automatically. However, there were still some problems, such as skin color. After all, this is the result of automatic software adjustment.

After that, I manually adjusted these parameters.

In order to see the face of the character more clearly, I adjusted the exposure bigger. However, this also brought new problems. The background behind the characters was overexposed.
I tried to reduce the area of exposure, but I still did not succeed.

In fact, I also tried to adjust other parameters. Although this adjustment can solve some of the problems that appear on the screen, such as local unclear. However, this will also have some side effects. And there are still some problems that have not been solved.

For me, to color the video is very unfamiliar, I need more practice and experience.

Sound and Image Assignment3.6 The Abstract / Haiku edit

#6 Haiku

It was raining on the day we recorded the videos, so the videos were very emotional. We first selected a Haiku, then chose videos and audios closest to the sentiment that Haiku itself wanted to express.

We have a lot of video material, and only a few of them be selected to be presented in the final Haiku video. In fact, during the editing process, I want to use as much video material as possible. However, I think it may undermine the integrity of the entire video. So I gave up on this idea.

In terms of sounds, I used only the sound of water as background music in the first version of the video (https://drive.google.com/open?id=10GWNB7NRNcOvbCflttPPjdYnhS3JQyhr). Because this is the best match for the video screen. In the second and third editions, Juno gave me different ideas. Here we have tried the audio overlay together. I originally thought that the superposition of multiple audios would make the heard sounds noisy. And it is not suitable for the emotion that we chose to express. However, after adjustments and editing, the final versions were good (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1igb90HmgoE561wCfcjfCG9Q36QO7XP66). Pr is not a software for editing audio, but it can be associated with Audition. This is very important for audio editing of multiple tracks.

Sound and Image Assignment3.7 Reflection on the course

#7 Reflection on the course

At the beginning of this semester, I wrote that I wanted to shoot a short video about a minute duration. The content of the short film can be very simple, but I want to deal with the details better. Now, I can say that I am fully capable of accomplishing such a short film shot. Because in this semester, I studied the scriptwriting-related courses. At the same time, short film shooting related skills are applied in another course. However, I still want to learn more about sounds, such as background music and effect sounds. For example, when creating a personal vlog, background music and some effects music can make the vlog more colourful.

Apart from shooting practice, I learned the use of Pr to edit videos. As I said before, I was experienced in editing video (using Vegas). And now, I have made at least 6 video clips with Pr. I found that I like to edit video.

A friend of mine has invited me to participate in a shooting project, even if my ability is still insufficient compared to him. I hope to gain more experience from this project.

CMWP Assignment4.2 Individual Peer Review Blog Post

1 snacktime

This project has a logo that can be seen as a design.

They chose the theme colour (white and yellow). Posted some special posts in the Instagram, allowing visitors to see this interface.

The visitors can see their hashtag #snacktime2018 in this interface. It is a good way of publicity.

I can see they used several hashtags in their Instagram posts. But on the Facebook page, they just use these 2 hashtags. And the account name is “Assignment”. It’s so wired. Although it is our assignment, we need to change the account name to be our project name.

According to the presentation, this group created the business account of Instagram. We did not use the business Instagram account. Perhaps the business account is more suitable for such online digital story projects.
The offline activities are easier to carry out for this project because share snacks is a very friendly topic.

I didn’t see their official website.

In the proposal site https://hannieyu98.wixsite.com/snacktime, clicking the link is not the home page but the production plan page. For the proposal website, it may be better to enter from the home page. It can be seen that the site is mobile friendly and there are no problems when browsing the web on mobile phones.

However, this theme embodies more of cultural exchanges and interactions, and cultural conflicts are not particularly manifested here. This may be the disadvantage of this project.

2 Ad Venture

This group has designed a very special logo, published social media upload pictures with a specific background colour and theme colour. Moreover, special designs can be presented on the website’s headline.

The video production is quite professional, whether the documentary or the commercial. It can be seen that from the time the video was recorded, they began to design what kind of video they want to shoot. The tone and background music of the entire video is also carefully arranged. Even when they were doing the presentation, they were filming behind-the-scenes documentaries.

Because they made a personal documentary for their interviewee, their facebook page has been designed as a shop for sealing some products made by the interviewee.

They have used several hashtags in their social media account posts, in order to attract more viewers.

In the website section https://adventure2035.wixsite.com/adventure/a-little-day

The initial page to enter is not the home page, but their product list page. The link buttons of the following three social media accounts are very obvious, which also provides convenience for users to visit their online store.

However, the theme of cultural conflict has not been clearly demonstrated in this projects. The part with cultural conflicts is only reflected in the individual documentary video. Of course, making all social media platforms into online stores is indeed a propaganda tool that is very suitable for the interviewee. However, this may overlook the part of the cultural conflict we wanted to represent.

There is no doubt that Ad Venture is a very perfect and very professional project. It would be better to reflect more of the cultural conflict in social media.

CMWP Assignment4.1 My Practice-led research Blog post

Teamwork on this digital story project

Our group has 4 members. From the project beginning to now the project is drawing to a close, our work is going well.

All of us are from the same country. This has brought great convenience to our communication. However, this does not mean that we could not face any problems. There are two factors that need to be considered for a team to succeed. One is that team leader needs to be clear about the team’s goals, and the other is that team members need to understand each person’s role (MoneyWatch 2007). We don’t have a clear leadership role in our team may be one of the reasons why we have problems in our cooperation. Fortunately, our goal is undoubtedly clear, because we discussed the topic very clearly when we first decided on the theme.

In the pre-project period, we were very democratically assigned the parts that we needed to complete (our role). However, the initially assigned role had to change when we doing the project. For example, I originally wanted to be responsible for the social media release, and then I have to put all the social media accounts to another member. Because I need to finish the video editing and website-building parts. In other words, our perception of ourselves was not as clear as we imagined. Moreover, we did not consider some uncertain factors, such as we have other tasks to complete. However, we discovered the problem in a timely manner and resolved the problem by timely discussing the work plan.

How to allocate the entire part of the project to be properly distributed to everyone is still a question that I need to think about in future team projects.

“Never let good performance go without recognition and follow-up. If you or your team see a good performance from an individual contributor, they should be sure the individual is both recognized and rewarded.” (Corporate Challenge 2014). This part could be what our team does very good. Whenever one of us completes a part of the project like someone finished to edit a video, everyone will praise and encourage this person. It always makes me feel that we are working in a very good atmosphere, a positive atmosphere. And even if we have encountered a variety of problems, no one complains.
